How to Cure Insomnia and Finally Start Sleeping Again!

Are you suffering from anxiety, insomnia, or menopause? If any of these apply to you then this article CAN help you!

You know the term sleeping like a baby. Well why do you think that is? The #1 cause of insomnia is stress! If we could all learn to de-stress or just not get worked up about anything, we would all sleep like babies!

I am 43 years old and NEVER had trouble with my sleep until the my father passed away about 9 months ago. I thought I had a hold on myself. I continued doing my usual every day activities. Being a mom, a wife, going to work, food shopping, cleaning the house...you know the rest. Anyway all of a sudden my health started to decline. I had tingling in my hands, insomnia, and heart palpitations (at the time I ended up in the ER twice because I thought I was having a heart attack). Come to find out, after many doctor visits to many different docs. All this was either perimenopause or anxiety or BOTH. Now I definitely know it was both. I have learned (without counseling) how to eliminate my anxiety. (most of it, not all because I am human). The perimenopause symptoms I manage daily and are a little better.

Now, let's talk about insomnia. What is insomnia? The inability to sleep. Plain and simple and it is AWFUL! It started for me about 3 months after my father died. Out of the blue! Not sleeping. What is this? I was so upset! To sit up all night desperately wanting to to nothing but sleep. It affected me on a daily basis. I thought about it all day long every single day just to go to bed that night a repeat the process. I hated it. My doctors prescribed Xanex for sleep and I felt like someone else because of it. What has my life become? Why is this happening to me? I felt like I was being punished for something. Then I started researching. Weeks and weeks of researching and here is what I found. All the tips I am about to share, I have personally do and they work for me. I hope this helps you!

Sleep Better Doing These Things On a Daily Basis:

Take a magnesium supplement. What is magnesium? It is one of the most common minerals on earth! It is essential for good heath and is well known for it's ability to relieve insomnia. Most people are deficient in magnesium and don't even know it. Studies have found that it decreases cortisol "stress hormone" that can keep you up at night and relaxes our muscles. There are a few different kinds of magnesium and the one recommend for sleep is the chelated magnasium or also known as magnesium glycinate. Magnesium is well known also for treating constipation so if you get diarrhea that means your dosage of magneisum is too high for your body and you will have to take a lower dose. You just have to find what dose works well for you. The recommended dose of Magnesiumfor insomnia is 400mg one hour before bedtime.

You can also try Natural Calm . It is a magnesium calming powder you drink at bedtime. This drink can be very effective to calm anxiety and help you sleep. You have to watch your dose because this is the magnesium citrate which is known to cause diarrhea more than the other forms of magnesium.

Get yourself an Essential Oil Diffuser

Lavender essential oil is one of the most versatile of all essential oils. It is very calming and helps relax you. Studies show that diffusing lavender at bedtime in your room can help you get better sleep. Get yourself some high quality Certified Organic Lavender Essential Oil

Make your room super cozy for sleeping - Make sure you have a comfortable pillow or pillows to sleep on. Make sure your bed has soft comfortable bedding and blankets.

Get some Calm Sleep Mist  This mist has essential oils in it that are known to help calm the mind and body so you can get some sleep! Spray nightly on your pillow.

Make sure the room temp is not to hot and not too cold!

I always have fan going in the room even if it is not pointed in my direction. I need the white noise in the background.

Make sure you are sleeping on clean sheets! Wash your bedding at least once a week.

Eliminate distractions - and if that means your spouse....then yes...sleep in another room! Yes, I now sleep in another room than my spouse. Honestly, we have a great relationship and he is okay with whatever helps me sleep.

Get the Calm appI love this app. It teaches you meditation, mindfulness, and how to relax and sleep!

Have the bed near a window - just cracking the window sometimes and letting in fresh air might be necessary. I do this sometimes when I wake up with dreadful hot flashes and it helps!

Sleep with a wet facecloth nearby - for women going through menopause this is a lifesaver when you wake up burning hot! Just put it on your forehead and the hot flash should dissipate. It does for me in about 15-20 minutes I go back to normal.

Stop using your cell phone or tablet 1 hour before you want to go to bed. The blue light that comes out of these electronics will signal your brain to stay awake.

Learn how to quiet your mind! Here is a great book!

Remember that tomorrow is irrelevant and don't think about it! Whatever tomorrow is going to be. It is going to be regardless. So, don't worry about it. Just try to relax and think to yourself...I just don't care about tomorrow right now and MEAN IT. It works for me. Sometimes the key is not caring!  I know this sounds bad but the minute you stop caring about something, it is no longer a problem! It is amazing actually!

Remember it is your natural innate ability to sleep. Don't think about it and don't force it. Just relax and let it happen. The brain is an amazing thing. Just think about this for a minute....

Our hearts just beat right? We don't have to think about it. All of our organs work together to keep us alive...without thinking. We don't have to force any of it to work. The same goes for sleep! Our brains have such an amazing unique ability to allow us to sleep and rejuvenate every single night without effort. I realized that the more I thought about not sleeping and worrying about it, the more my brain did just that! Not sleeping! Your subconscious mind holds on to these thoughts!

What I did was this...I literally STOPPED CARING! Yes I decided that I do not care if I do sleep tonight or don't sleep tonight. If I'm up, I'm up. I will just read a good book. And you know what? The day I realized that I need to stop caring about sleeping was the day I started sleeping a little better once again! It was amazing. I was no longer worried and I did not occupy my thoughts and subconscious thoughts with worrying about sleep.
